ARE YOUR STEPS ORDERED?
How can you know if you are going in the right direction? How can you know if you are truly on the path God has designed for you?
The answer is found in Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” In this passage, we see three actions that we must do, and one amazing action that God will do.
First, we trust. Trust means “to put confidence in.” But it’s not just trust; it’s trust in the Lord. The Lord is trustworthy. He keeps His promises. He has never failed us, and He never will. Our trust is safe with Him.The Lord asks us to trust Him with all our heart. All means all. Failing to trust the Lord in all areas and with all things will leave us vulnerable to self-will and self-reliance, both of which will deter us off the divinely directed path.
Second, we lean not unto our own understanding. Trusting in our own understanding can get us into real trouble. The Lord’s ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. Instead of trying to understand things in our head, we are to trust God’s heart, God’s plan, and God’s path for our lives.
Third, we acknowledge Him in all our ways. We tend to think of acknowledgment as a nod or a tip of our hat, as in “nice to see ya.” But in the original Hebrew, the connotations of the word “acknowledge” are rich and deep. “Acknowledge” means to know, to perceive, to discern, to know by experience, to respect, and to be instructed.
So, in Proverbs 3:5–6, God is asking us to bring Him into the middle of everything we are doing. Respecting God’s preeminence in our lives allows us to know Him and discern Him in all our ways. Remaining open to the Lord’s instruction enables us to make good decisions as we journey through life.
Finally, He shall direct thy path. What a comfort it is to have this wonderful promise! If we will align ourselves with God’s will, trust Him with every detail, and lean on Him instead of ourselves, He will direct our path. When we submit our ways to His Lordship, doors will open for us that He has ordained. We can walk in confidence, knowing that our footing is solid and that He is ordering our steps.
